His Georgia State teammates quickly caught on to the name but altered it over time. "Hit Stick" was shortened to "Stick," the name he goes by today. The name, along with Lane's playmaking ability, stuck out to Mack Brown, who coached against him in 2022 when the Tar Heels visited the Bulldogs. Brown and Lane's UNC teammates refer to him as Stick.
