The Bears’ football program claims 5 national championships, including 4 straight from 1920-23 (the NCAA doesn’t recognize the 1923 title). It also claims a title from 1937 (again, not recognized by the NCAA). Its basketball team has been to 3 Final Fours, winning the national championship in 1959 under the guidance of legendary coach Pete Newell.
