Ricky Lanier, the first Black scholarship football player at UNC, passed away Oct. 1 at age 76. He will be recognized in Kenan Stadium prior to Saturday's Carolina vs. Virginia game. Bill Dooley was hired as the Tar Heels' new football coach in December1966, and one of his early recruiting targets was Lanier, a dynamic quarterback and athlete from Williamston.
