Sean Payton mused about stepping down for Bill Belichick in 2024, until he broke wins record


After the Patriots fired coach following the 2023 season, Sean Payton (who had just finished his first year with Denver) “considered suggesting” to owner Greg Penner that Payton would step back to the position of assistant head coach, running the offense. Belichick would hold the job until he won 15 games, breaking Don Shula’s record of 347. (NBC Sports)
