How Cameron Fens Rounds Out UNC Basketball's Frontcourt

Cameron Fens is headed to Chapel Hill, and the timing couldn't be better for a UNC Basketball team that has been searching for frontcourt muscle all offseason. The 7-foot, 255-pound center from South Dakota committed to Michael Malone on Friday, becoming the Tar Heels' sixth transfer portal addition of the offseason.

The recruitment materialized quickly, facilitated by North Carolina associate head coach Chuck Martin, who had a pre-existing relationship with Fens' agent, making it one of Malone's faster portal additions.

Fens was a First Team All-Summit League and Summit League All-Defensive Team selection last season, averaging 14.4 points, 8.7 rebounds, and 1.5 blocks per game — and ranked in the 99th percentile for time spent in the post. He's a throwback low-post presence who brings physicality and rim protection that complement the more perimeter-oriented bigs already on the UNC Basketball roster.

Fens' commitment fills a specific gap alongside Jarin Stevenson, Alexandros Samodurov, and Sayon Keita, offering immediate, proven production while the program's younger and international players continue to develop within Malone's system.

Fens was among the class of 2022 players caught in the NCAA's new age-based eligibility model, which does not grandfather athletes who completed four seasons by Spring 2026. A Davidson County, Tennessee judge granted him a temporary injunction against the NCAA in his own lawsuit, clearing the way for his fifth season.

Legal uncertainty remains a backdrop for the entire class of 2022 situation as the NCAA continues to appeal, but as of now Fens is eligible and UNC's roster is officially full. For a Carolina Basketball staff that has been hunting for a physical center all summer, the wait appears to have paid off.
