Nonprofit at UNC pairs those with chronic illnesses with a service dog

Posted Aug 16, 2026
UNC’s chapter of Lux’s Purpose was founded this year. Service dogs cost as much as $50,000-$70,000, and there is not a single insurance plan that covers it, which makes having a service dog almost impossible for someone already burdened by the financial strain of a medical crisis. The service dogs are trained how to associate commands with tasks. (Daily Tar Heel)
