UNC Basketball Roundup: Frontcourt Cleared, Non-Conf. Slate Set, UNC & Duke Battle For Top Recruit
Posted Aug 24, 2026
It was a busy week for the UNC Basketball program. The roster questions that have hung over the Tar Heels this offseason finally got answers, Carolina's non-conference slate was unveiled, and Michael Malone opened up on his chaotic first few months. Here's everything that happened in UNC Basketball and recruiting.
Freshman center Sayon Keita touched down in Chapel Hill last weekend and wasted no time exploring the town, even with his NCAA clearance still pending. Days later, Malone confirmed both Keita and Alexandros Samodurov are fully cleared and in every team activity: "Everything is a go," he said. It became official Friday when UNC released its full 2026-27 roster, listing Keita at 7-foot-1, 205 pounds and Samodurov as a junior with three years left.
The legal fight behind it took another turn, too. A Tenth Circuit stay narrowed the earlier nationwide ruling on class-of-2022 eligibility — but it doesn't affect players protected by their own state lawsuits, which is why transfer center Cameron Fens, covered by a Tennessee case, remains clear.
Between Fens, Keita, and Samodurov, Malone's frontcourt rebuild is resolved — and the official roster shows five returners and 11 newcomers: four freshmen, six transfers, and one other international addition.
Non-conference schedule is set — and it's a real one
UNC's full 17-game non-conference schedule is out, and Malone's debut comes against USC in an exhibition. Headliners include a return trip to Madison Square Garden against Kentucky and three matchups against last season's NCAA Tournament teams. Tar Heel Tribune called it a schedule full of legitimate measuring sticks, and ranked all 17 games from toughest to softest if you want the full breakdown.
The centerpiece had already leaked: a new two-year "Tobacco Road Classic" against NC State, kicking off Dec. 15 in Greensboro. It was made official at a Wednesday press conference, with Malone speaking about embracing the rivalry. With the games classified non-conference, the series is built to survive even if ACC realignment shakes things up.
Malone on his first four months: "Chaos"
Reflecting on his start, Malone didn't sugarcoat it — "chaos" is the word he used for the last four and a half months. He credited a familiar name for getting him here: "Coach Williams had a lot to do with me taking this job," he said of Roy Williams. And he's been clear about how he spends his time now: "I don't golf. I work," he said, describing the early push on the next two recruiting classes.
With classes underway, Malone described the new rhythm of college coaching — "I'm checking on classes," he said, a different day-to-day after 25 years in the NBA. He also discussed building a staff that understood Carolina Basketball while bringing fresh perspective.
Recruiting: a busy month across multiple boards
Malone's staff is chasing serious volume. Sports Illustrated counted seven top-15 prospects in the 2027 class with reported UNC interest — Beckham Black, CJ Rosser, Adan Diggs, Demarcus Henry, Jordan Page, NaVorro Bowman Jr., and Darius Wabbington among them.
On visits: 6-foot-7 forward Asa Montgomery (No. 16 in 2027) locked in a visit for Sept. 25, and 5-star PG Nasir Anderson trimmed his list to 10 schools, UNC included. NaVorro Bowman Jr. still intends to visit despite being off his latest list.
The Beckham Black recruitment is turning into a real Tobacco Road battle — Black already has a UNC visit set, but Duke has reportedly enlisted alum Paolo Banchero to work on him.
Meet the newcomers
Terrence Brown's path to UNC started with him hitching rides across the country as a kid to watch tournaments he wasn't even playing in. Northwestern transfer Cade Bennerman brings a 7-foot-5 wingspan, and guard Angelo Brizzi is entering his fifth college program in six years — TarHeel247 has the winding path that led him to Chapel Hill.
Alumni notes
Armando Bacot is expanding his business portfolio, using NIL earnings to open a Home2 Suites by Hilton in Raleigh. Tyler Hansbrough got candid about a stretch where he lost his love for the game during his NBA career. And Garrison Brooks was named to USA Basketball's roster for its World Cup Qualifying window.
That's the week. With the roster locked, cleared, and on campus together, all that's left now is basketball.
