The 1976 North Carolina Tar Heels might as well have been considered America’s team. It had four players that would go on to win Olympic gold medals in basketball the following summer while being guided by their college coach. Dean Smith had become one of the hot coaches in the game several years earlier, but at this point he was on par with anyone once John Wooden retired.
