Like any hardcore Yankee who comes to the South, Frank McGuire rubbed some people the wrong way. He was a charismatic charmer early on, relishing his role as a carpetbagger hired to end the dominance of N.C. State and Everett Case. And once he signed up the players to comprise a championship team, the Tar Heels played with an attitude that came from their coach. The more they won the more resentment grew among opposing schools.
