Heels return to winning recruiting formula

Former North Carolina coach Mack Brown built a dominant program by winning the state's recruiting wars and supplementing the group with top-flight national players. Current UNC coach Butch Davis is following the same pattern. Tar Heels commitments such as Pikeville Aycock senior Jarrod James, who is rated as the No. 3 offensive guard prospect in the country by Rivals.com, and receiver T.J. Thorpe of Durham Jordan, are among the best players in the state.
