Merletti leads UNC onto the field with a flag that flew in Afghanistan

The flag will carry into Kenan Stadium today as the Tar Heels take on ECU was a birthday gift from his brother - Capt. Michael Merletti, a U.S. Army Ranger with the 101st Airborne. Michael was doing his first tour in Iraq in 2008 when he asked what his younger brother wanted for a birthday present. "I told him I thought it would be a pretty cool idea if he'd fly a flag for me on a couple of missions over there and bring it back to me when he came back to the States." (Fayetteville Observer)
