Coach Bill's Video Evaluation: Bronson Koenig
Posted Feb 20, 2011
Former college basketball coach and Tar Heel Times contributor, Coach Bill, has recently offered his insights into several of UNC's top-rated basketball recruits. Today he analyzes 2013 point guard prospect Bronson Koenig (6-2, 165, Lacrosse WI), who just received a scholarship offer from UNC.
What stands out early and often in the below footage is that Bronson already possesses a pure shooting stroke from behind the arc. To be only a sophomore in high school and already have three-point shooting as a major strength is rare. What is also rare is a young guard who combines high-level shooting with an advanced playmaking capacity.
Koenig already displays natural-born point guard instincts, creating scoring opportunities for teammates with passing acumen in both the open court and half court. He is equally capable of navigating through the open court and reading passing lanes or delivering on-time, on-target passes in screen-and-roll execution and off of improvised penetration.
Complementing those advanced gifts, is noticeable "juice" in his legs (overall athleticism and energy) that allows him to be a guard who has enough half-court quickness to turn the corner on a defender or race up the court and dictate in transition by either creating layups for others or aggressively, creatively finishing himself.
An added variable that a college-level evaluator will look for in a young point guard that would give him a chance to be special is displaying a competitive "edge". Playing the game with a level of confidence and fearlessness that exudes a capacity to be a step-up performer during big possessions and games. I see that kind of "winner's intangible" watching Koenig compete.
