Dean Smith's fading memory is a hard loss to handle

It is impossible to see North Carolina on the front of a basketball jersey and not think of the architect of the program. The Tar Heels will play at the Prudential Center tonight against Marquette, a rematch of a heartbreaking loss in the 1977 national title game. There was a time when Dean Smith, who retired in 1997 with more wins than any Division 1 coach, could remember every play. Now, those closest to him say it depends on the day.
