When North Carolina hired Butch Davis in 2007, it was a clear signal that the Tar Heels wanted to move up to the penthouse level of college football. And when Davis hired his old friend John Blake as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator, it was a clear signal that it was OK to take some shortcuts to get upstairs quicker.
