Tar Heels have fleeting bowl hopes while Terrapins still in hunt

North Carolina hoped to surprise everybody by contending for a bowl game in its first season under Butch Davis. Maryland figured it could get back to the postseason under Ralph Friedgen. Two-thirds of the way through the season, the Tar Heels are almost out of chances to realize those dreams while the Terrapins are in position -- though hardly a lock -- to reach that goal heading into Saturday's matchup.
