Heels' defense puts foot down

Despite a 2-5 record, North Carolina's defense has been progressing in recent weeks, and coach Butch Davis called Saturday's second-half performance probably the "finest" of the season. "They just went out and played extraordinarily well," said Davis, noting that it was the defense that gave Carolina a chance to get back into a game that was rapidly going awry.
