The Tar Heels had to dodge a second-half rally from the Hurricanes, but they eventually defended their home turf, securing a 33-27 victory that pumped new life into a team that had lost four straight games. The victory marked the first Atlantic Coast Conference victory for first-year Tar Heels coach Butch Davis, who spent six years guiding the Hurricanes.
