When Randy Shannon was a hard-hitting linebacker at Miami, then-Hurricanes football assistant Butch Davis could see the youngster had the instincts to be a good coach. Davis, the first-year coach at North Carolina, remembered: "He was very smart." Davis just never imagined that two decades later he'd be facing Shannon from the opposite sideline.
