Butch Davis is not a what-if kind of man. If he was, he never would have pursued a coaching comeback in Chapel Hill, N.C., where the legacy of Dean Smith prompts the sweetly smug question, ''If God is not a Tar Heel, then why is the sky Carolina blue?'' but conveniently ignores the fact that the football team hasn't had a winning season since 2001.
