Gardner-Webb led 13-10 early in the season opener, but North Carolina closed out the first half with a 28-13 run to take a 38-26 lead into the break. Sophomore forward James Michael McAdoo was pivotal to the breakaway, scoring 10 of his career-high 26 points during that run. The Tar Heels led by as many as 18 points in the second half but got sloppy in stretches.
