Magic, Bird and the selection show: How the NCAA Tournament came to be a spectacle

When CBS first won the rights to a still-maturing NCAA Tournament in 1982, the network cooked up the idea to air the unveiling of the basketball bracket for the first time. As it turned out, announcing the teams selected (and scorned) — along with the puzzle pieces of host cities, seeds and matchups — made for captivating television.
