But I was lucky enough to meet a person who I considered a real sports hero when I was a young guy growing up, a larger-than-life man who changed sports and changed the way people viewed each other in a troubled time in this state. Clarence “Big House” Gaines. He was the legendary coach at Winston-Salem State for 47 years, leading his teams to 828 victories and the 1967 NCAA Division II national title.
