Dean Smith’s Innovations Included an Early Zeal for Statistical Analysis

For decades, Coach Dean Smith would tell his players how many points they had scored and had allowed per possession. In the 1960s, he began to task managers with keeping the statistic. Smith — who majored in mathematics at Kansas, and who said he would have been happy to be a math teacher — emphasized possession-based analysis as early as 1959. (New York Times)
