Humility, attention to detail marked Dean Smith's career, life

As the final seconds of his milestone victory melted away, the capacity crowd rose and chanted his name. Dean Smith was about to become major college basketball's all-time winningest coach. But Smith did not acknowledge the applause. The genuine humility and obsessive attention to detail in that 1997 snapshot defined the gentleman who died Saturday at age 83. (Daily Press)
