Dean Smith was about "doing the right thing"

Four years after Greensboro's sit-ins, UNC basketball coach Dean Smith walked into The Pines, a Chapel Hill restaurant. He hadn't become the Dean Smith yet, not in 1964. Back then, he was just another university employee, albeit better known than most, grabbing a bite to eat with his minister. Smith brought a second guest — a black UNC theology student — to the whites-only eatery.
