Dean Smith ambled up to the tee box, relief splashed across his face. “Boy, I’ve really been looking forward to this,” he said. “Last night, I answered my last congratulatory note for the national championship.” It was 1984. Smith won his first title in 1982. It had taken him more than two years to write back to all who had congratulated him and his Tar Heels.
