I remember ’s handshake. I was a kid, maybe 10 in the mid-1960s, when I met Smith for the first time after a North Carolina basketball game at the original Charlotte Coliseum. When he shook my hand, I did my best not to whimper because he had a grip like a vise. It was the first time I felt conviction in a handshake. (Charlotte Observer)
