North Carolina started off Dean Smith's final season as head coach making a dubious kind of history. During the 1996-97 season, the Tar Heels began ACC play 0-3 for the first time ever. And the young squad that featured sophomores Vince Carter and Antawn Jamison were headed to a fourth loss, trailing NC State by nine points with 2:34 left in the game.
