Big House Gaines, Dean Smith admired each other

I couldn’t help but think about Big House Gaines on Sunday — in between writing assignments as we chased plenty of stories on the life and times of Dean Smith, the legendary former North Carolina coach. Smith and Gaines — the legendary former Winston-Salem State basketball coach — knew each other very well. Both were firm believers in loyalty to players long after they had left college.
