I remember the date as though it happened just yesterday. Tuesday, Feb. 20, 1996. I was still a young, know-it-all sportswriter working in my second season of covering the Triangle teams for the Fayetteville Observer and I was feeling pretty proud of myself for a column I had written taking North Carolina basketball coach Dean Smith to task for his handling of an incident during a game against Clemson.
