Recent wave of sports deaths all too real for Sam Perkins

The calls have become disturbingly normal. Too many times this year, Sam Perkins has answered his phone, learned of a death from his basketball past and mourned, realizing his own mortality during this never-ending grieving process. Dean Smith, his legendary college coach at North Carolina, a man he revered and helped win a national championship in 1982, died on Feb. 7. (Seattle Times)
