Dean Smith’s last play

The late Dean Smith did so much to burnish the often blemished image of big-time college athletics, he is remembered so justly for his personification of decency and altruism, it’s hard to believe he could offer one more striking example. But the legendary UNC-Chapel Hill basketball coach who died in February did just that, a posthumous gesture that once again reverberated far beyond the southern part of heaven.
