College basketball's crossroads

Fans still tune in to March Madness. But the tournament is built for popularity as a made-for-TV, one-and-done drama with gambling interests at stake. Interest level is far different in the regular season, which carries less meaning for games that struggle to excite the public. This figures to be an important offseason for college basketball. Generally speaking, the game has become slow and grinding. The sport endured its worst season for points per game (67.6) since 1952.
