To most North Carolina basketball alums, Bill Guthridge was Dean Smith's loyal, competitive, wise-cracking assistant. He showed the same characteristics as a head coach to 25 players over three seasons, leading the Tar Heels to Final Four berths in 1998 and 2000. Any description of Guthridge, particularly as a head coach, merits the inclusion of successful.
