Walter Byers, first NCAA executive director, inventor of 'student-athlete,' dies at age 93

Walter Byers, who died on Wednesday, coined the term "student-athlete" while building the NCAA into a money-making monolith and college athletics' enforcement arm as the organization's first full-time executive director. Then, after serving 36 years in that position and earning a reputation as a zealous defender of amateurism, Byers turned on the NCAA, terming it "self-righteous." (AL.com)
