UNC safety Sam Smiley leads improved defense

UNC's senior linebacker Jeff Schoettmer called Smiley “the most improved player on the defense during spring'' on Monday during the ACC Football Kickoff. The 5-foot-11, 190-pounder from Jacksonville, Florida was plagued his first two seasons with the Tar Heels by injuries. He returned to action last season to play in all 13 games and made 52 tackles.
