As the offensive coordinator with the Chicago Bears, John Shoop gained a reputation as a conservative play-caller whose offense depended upon running the ball, with a short passing game that seldom included a deep ball. Often criticized in Chicago, Shoop understands a fan’s irresistible urge to challenge play calling and to believe they know far more than the offensive coordinator. He’s been there himself.
