1. (tie) Dean Smith dies at 83: On the morning of Sunday, Feb. 8, North Carolina woke up to news that left many crushed. The previous night, after years of failing health, UNC's iconic former basketball coach, Dean Smith, died at 83. Michael Jordan, Mike Krzyzewski and President Barack Obama joined a chorus of Tar Heel voices praising Smith and his impact.
