Over the years, when North Carolina repeatedly pulled out close contests with flawless execution in the final seconds, players pointed to the fact that coach Dean Smith had prepared them in practice for every contingency. Only a matter of doing what we were taught, they said. Or, judging by the effect of a chronically malfunctioning game clock that was further mishandled by a veteran Big East officiating crew, perhaps victory resides in the province of a higher power altogether.
