North Carolina and second-year head coach Butch Davis were propelled into a “giant step forward’’ scenario last weekend at the 2008 Atlantic Coast Conference Football Kickoff. The Tar Heels were touted for a runner-up finish in the ACC’s Coastal Division behind traditional power Virginia Tech and ahead of notable football brethren Miami, Georgia Tech and Virginia in the media’s annual preseason Kickoff poll.
