Shaka Smart's Team USA coaching role proved vital for Texas' future

When five-star big man Mohamed Bamba committed to Texas on Thursday it ended one of the more unique recruitments in Texas’ 2017 class — one that started last summer in Houston and blossomed in Chile. Bamba was one of 12 players on Team USA’s U-18 team competing in the FIBA Americas U18 Championship. Smart, of course, was the head coach of the team.
