In July 1988, the night before Roy Williams packed up his family and moved them to Lawrence, Kan., Dean Smith and his wife, Linnea, hosted the new Kansas head coach and his wife, Wanda, for one last supper at their home in Chapel Hill. After dinner, Smith offered advice for his longtime assistant’s first head coaching opportunity. “Just be yourself. That will be good enough."
