Gone South: Big Four bringing up ACC rear
Posted Jul 25, 2006
Big Four schools haven't demonstrated the winning edge for years. Duke split the 1989 title with Virginia, perhaps the greatest standings upset in ACC history. Carolina raised its last trophy in 1980, a year after N.C. State earned its last title. Wake Forest won its only championship in 1970. The contending pool looks almost as shallow. No Big Four team has finished second since Mack Brown's final Carolina roundup in 1997.
