The story of UNC’s first Olympic medalist

Floyd “Chunk” Simmons was an all-around athlete in Chapel Hill in both football and track and field. The son of Davidson's football coach, Simmons was a good player for UNC but was stuck behind Charlie Justice. He was more known for track and field and became a star in the decathlon. Simmons once said he competed in that discipline because he “wanted to do it all.”
