Tar Heels' season ended up more than a stopgap

They had seen and heard the bleak preseason projections. Maybe North Carolina would sneak into the NCAA tournament. Maybe they'd be in the NIT. Maybe they'd finish below .500. In any event, this was widely expected to be the Tar Heels' forgotten season, sandwiched between one national title and next year's journey to another. Forget that.
