UNC was going to punt with about three minutes to play. Instead, offensive coordinator Phil Longo convinced coach Mack Brown to go for it on fourth-and-17. This came after consecutive sacks. The premise of the revised decision was that the chances were better to convert the fourth down than getting the ball back with 30 seconds left and no timeouts.
