Former state Senate Majority Leader Tony Rand, one of the most powerful men in North Carolina politics for decades, died Friday morning. He was 80. He was known for his dry wit, political savvy, and love of all things Carolina, acting often to advance the UNC system's interests in the legislature. Rand graduated from UNC in 1961 and the UNC School of Law in 1964.
