UNC Football vs. Duke Postgame Notes

North Carolina improves to 8-2, 4-2 in the ACC standings. This was the second time UNC and Duke have played overtime. In 2007, UNC beat the Blue Devils, 20-14. Bryson Nesbit tied the UNC record for career touchdown receptions by a tight end. Nesbit and teammate Kamari Morales both have 10. Nesbit tied his career high in catches with six.
• UNC is 2-0 in overtime games this season. The Tar Heels beat App State, 40-34, in two overtimes on September 10.
• This is the first season UNC has played two multiple overtime games.
• The Tar Heels improve to 6-10 all-time in overtime.
• The 92 points are the third-most combined points scored in the series history.
• Noah Burnette made all six of his field goal attempts, which tied the UNC single-game record for most made field goals and most makes without a miss. Josh McGee also went 6 for 6 against Duke in 1999.
• It was the seventh time this season UNC scored at least 40 points and the 44th time since Mack Brown returned to Chapel Hill in 2019. UNC has scored 30 or more in 14 of its last 18 games.
• Mack Brown is 282-146-1, including 107-70-1 in 15 seasons as head coach of the Tar Heels.
• Carolina gained 537 yards. It was the 27th time since Brown returned UNC gained 500 or more yards. The Tar Heels have gained 500-plus yards in three straight games. It is the first time UNC has 500 yards in three straight games since 2020 against Virginia, Duke and Wake Forest.
• Drake Maye completed 28 of 41 passes for 342 yards, ran for two touchdowns, including the gamewinner in the second overtime, and threw for a score.
• Maye threw his 60th career passing touchdown on a go-ahead fourth-quarter score to Bryson Nesbit.
• Maye has thrown at least one touchdown pass in seven of the eight games this season and 21 of 24 career starts.
• This was the 12th time Maye has thrown for 300 or more yards in his career. The Tar Heels are 9-3 when he does.
• Carolina’s two-point conversion in the second overtime on Maye’s pass to John Copenhaver was UNC’s first since the win at App State in 2022.
• Maye rushed for two touchdowns for the third time in his career.
• Maye has 3,145 passing yards this season, the seventh most in a season by a Tar Heel.
• Omarion Hampton rushed for 169 yards on a career-high 31 carries and scored two touchdowns. He has 13 rushing TDs and 1,236 rushing yards in 10 games this season.
• Hampton’s 1,236 rushing yards are the ninth most in a season by a Tar Heel. He only needs 18 yards to move up to third.
• Hampton rushed for 980 yards in Carolina’s seven games at home this season, the second-most yards in a season at Kenan Stadium. He passed Giovani Bernard for second. Bernard gained 851 at Kenan in 2012. Don McCauley holds the record with 1,064.
• Hampton has rushed for 100 yards in five straight games. He is the first Tar Heel to rush for 100 yards in five straight games since Giovani Bernard in 2011 and only the sixth Tar Heel to rush for 100 yards in five or more consecutive games.
• McCauley gained 100 yards in eight consecutive games in 1970. Bernard (2011), Ethan Horton (1984), Mike Voight (1975), McCauley (1969) and Hampton had five-game streaks.
• Saturday marked Hampton’s sixth 100-yard game of the season and eighth of his career. He is the first Tar Heel to have six 100-yard rushing games in a season since Javonte Williams in 2020. Hampton is the 10th Tar Heel to have six 100-yard rushing games in a season.
• Hampton’s 13 rushing touchdowns equal the seventh-most in a single season in Tar Heel history.
• Hampton added a career-high eight receptions for 47 yards.
• Hampton’s 31 rushing attempts were the most by a Tar Heel since Ryan Houston had 37 carries for 164 yards against Duke in 2009.
• Tez Walker had seven catches for a career-high162 yards (previous was 159 yards while playing for Kent State vs. Miami of Ohio on 10/8/2022).
• Linebacker Cedric Gray led Carolina with 11 tackles. He passed Brian Simmons for ninth in tackles by a Tar Heel with 344. Rondell Jones is eighth with 350.
