Western N.C. mourns loss of another Streater who died too young

passed away last week at age 50. He was the best and most athletic high-school baseball player I've ever seen and was gifted enough to play defensive back and punt for North Carolina before signing a deal with the Washington Redskins. And on the drive home after inking a deal to play in the NFL in 1981, his car skidded on wet pavement and a broken neck left him paralyzed. Steve was the second-best athlete in his family that included three brothers who played college football. (Asheville Citizen-Times)
