Tar Heels still short of elite status

In many ways, Saturday's Meineke Car Care Bowl illustrates the improvement North Carolina has made under and the progress the Tar Heels still have to make. For the first time since 1998, North Carolina (8-4) is playing in a bowl for the second straight season. The Tar Heels boast a ferocious defense with NFL-caliber athletes the likes of which failed to develop for several years before Davis arrived after the 2006 season. (Charlotte Observer)
